Our operations are mostly located in remote areas where infrastructures and economic opportunities are scarce.
Besides direct employment opportunities, local populations often rely on Sipef operations for critical services. In PNG and on the SA Plantations J. Eglin’s banana plantations in Ivory Coast, maintenance of public roads and bridges by our operations benefit all surrounding communities.
Communities neighboring our operations know they can count on support for their communal projects. Over the years, Sipef has funded the rehabilitation and building of numerous schools, places of worship and village offices.
In all our operations, great care is given to the welfare of our workers and their families. Sipef provides workers and dependents with decent housing, free medical care, and ensures that access to school is granted to all the children of our workers. Where there are schools, Sipef will take care of the transportation, and where there are no schools, Sipef will make agreements with the local governments to ensure that a school can be built and staffed, with financial support from Sipef. The best students can also receive scholarships from the company to pursue their studies in university.
In Indonesia, our Bengkulu operation (
PT AM) has expanded its "Kebun Masyarakat Desa" (KMD) program. Initiated in 2000, the KMD program initially provided villages neighboring our estates with a long-term source of income. Each participating village allocates 15 hectares of communal land for palm oil development and management by
PT AM, funded by a loan from the company. Management of the KMD plots is transparent and participative, and this system is proving very successful. Villages which are not neighboring our estates have asked to join, and to date, 51 villages are involved at different stages of the KMD program.
